Becoming a volunteer

Helping to prevent suicide

Volunteering with Suicide Action Montreal is a particularly rewarding experience on many levels. In addition to receiving extensive training in crisis intervention, you will become part of a team of 150 people who promote the same values of community and solidarity. You will also be part of the solution to suicide, which is a serious problem in Quebec.

To be a volunteer

  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Be able to express yourself in French (written and spoken). Bilingualism is an asset.
  • Ability to easily establish good interpersonal relationships: know how to communicate with others and understand their needs.
  • Good listening and communication skills: understand the speaker’s message and clearly communicate relevant information orally or in writing.
  • Empathetic: able to put oneself in the shoes of others, to perceive how they feel.
  • Be able to intervene in a kind, respectful and confidential manner.
    Communicate in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Well-rounded individual.
  • Willing to volunteer for 150 hours (four hours per week). Volunteer hours are between 8:00 am and midnight, every day of the week.
  • To be able to come to our offices, located in Montreal.

Anyone applying to be a volunteer will be contacted within the next two weeks for a brief telephone interview. If your application is accepted, please be aware that there may be a waiting period before you can participate in one of the volunteer training sessions.

Once you are accepted, you will receive practical and theoretical training and work with an experienced volunteer for your first few telephone shifts. You are free to attend various training workshops throughout the year. No matter when you help someone in distress, you can count on the support of a staff member. We want to help you help others!
