About Suicide Action Montreal

Mission

With the belief that suicide is preventable, the mission of Suicide Action Montréal (SAM) is to help prevent these incidents through greater access to information, quality services and resources. SAM recognizes that suicide prevention is a process and provides direct support to those who are lonely, depressed and contemplating suicide. SAM also assists those left behind by suicide including the family and the individual`s social network, support workers, and/or other professionals involved. The strength of these services relies on the commitment of dedicated paid staff and highly trained volunteers. SAM continues to build its expertise through evidence-based research and learning from other community organizations.

Values

At SAM, we embody our values as they influence how we interact with our staff, support our clients, and how we work with our partners. Our values reflect our expertise and knowledge as well as our commitment to action and mobilization in providing the best services possible.

Protection of Life

Everyone has the right to a commitment to life promotion and assistance with suicide prevention. If an individual is at an impasse, it can be a relief in knowing that support is available, and that suicidal feelings, may be treated. Through support from SAM, a sense of hope may be reborn for the individual, by helping to find solutions to stresses and problems.

Respect for the person

Everyone must be appreciated and treated with dignity. When the suffering felt by the individual is shared by a responder at SAM, a sense of relief will follow. At SAM we provide the opportunity to individuals to express themselves without judgement, to validate their feelings and find the appropriate resources.

Commitment

SAM’s belief is that everyone has inner strengths and a capacity to choose to live. With this in mind, our highly trained responders acknowledge the feelings of an individual contemplating suicide. Our team listens, cares, is empathetic, non-judgmental, and accepting of diverse values and beliefs. The responder’s goal is to create a SAFE PLACE to help the caller identify their personal sources of satisfaction, pride and hope in their lives.
